Implant Crowns vs. Dental Crowns

Implant Crowns vs. Dental Crowns

Implant crowns are the final touch to dental implants, and they make the implants look just like real teeth! If you’re looking for a seamless smile and easier eating, implant crowns are definitely a must. Without them, life can be difficult and lead to a disruption in your lifestyle. I have a couple of crowns, and let’s just say I have never been questioned if my teeth are real or fake. I get to live my life to the fullest, all thanks to my implant crowns.

Now, dental crowns can be made from ceramics, porcelain, gold, silver, and even metal alloys. As one could imagine, the ceramic and porcelain crowns are the most natural looking, but for the most durability gold and silver are slightly better. Let’s get into the different types.

There are two main types that people can get: cement-retained implant crowns and screw-retained dental crowns.

Cement-retained implant crowns are attached above the abutment and dental cement is used to keep the “tooth” permanently attached. These are the most natural looking attachments.

With screw-retained dental crowns, there is a lingual and occlusal screw. It is designed with a hole on the side of this portion of the device. This hole makes it able to connect the tooth restoration and the implant with a screw on the external-facing end. This makes it easy to remove the tooth for repairs, further restorations, and/or cleanings.

However, there are a few drawbacks.

They can be easily removed and repaired, but the area around the access hole is pretty prone to chips, and the crown can become loose over time. Therefore a patient will have to invest more time and money to be able to keep the crown in its best shape.

However, cemented implant crowns also can cause inflammation in the gum line, and they can be more challenging to remove when needed to do so for repairs and restorations.
